![]() At first glance Moreton’s illustration style seems to be a bit like John Porcellino with the minimalism factor turned up to 150%. Obtained for a mere $6 from the small press Uncivilized Books, this book is a kind of little wonder. Moreton, a British comics artist, may be best known for his zine, Smoo: There’s an intimacy to this approach, an honesty I love. What? He joined the Scouts? So what?! You mean no tragedy ensues? No abuse? But these are real life stories. The simple and undramatic tale reminds me of the work of Quebecois comics artist Michel Rabagliati. How few lines is required to tell a story? There are many wordless pages, where the images carry the brunt of the meaning. The title The Plans We Made is a reference to a line in a Beach Boys song, and the simple tale is a nostalgic look back at youthful summer. Here, you can get a taste of Porcellino’s style, and can immediately see the connection: ![]() Check this out, even for five minutes, to see Simon Moreton’s clean (and not sketchy) minimalist style which would seem to owe something to John Porcellino: ![]() ![]() To that I would say - talking cephalopod. It is too bad, really, because I do believe Tepper intended this to be a Serious Statement About Humanity. I would hate to spoil it for you, but the last 100 pages had elements to the story that were so ridiculous I was laughing until tears went down my cheeks. What starts as a simple story soon brings in the crazy elements of A Plague of Angels, including but not limited to genetic/DNA manipulation, post-nuclear half-men, magic teleportation devices, curses, talking beasts, cyberpunk librarians, quests, and a race of people living in the sea. It just isn't believable enough, isn't realistic enough. I'm sad to say that she fails miserably on this scale. But I think what she is attempting to do, and failing at, is writing like Margaret Atwood, creating a somewhat ridiculous landscape based on a dystopian future of our own world that will spur us into treating our environment better. If Tepper were merely telling an entertaining story, that would be one thing. Entire cities have either moved up mountains or been covered in water. The waters have been rising on a global scale, and the terrain has been changing rapidly. ![]() It started out stronger - a young girl is tasked with carrying the soul of a dead princess back to her home country, and is assisted by Abasio, the hero of A Plague of Angels. All because it was not how you imagined it. Sometimes in travel and life expectations can be the very thing that destroy an incredible place, a moment, even a memory. Then you stumble upon unexpected moments and memories, which if they hadn’t occurred wouldn’t have left you disappointed. This is one part of travelling I love, when you have no expectations of where you’re going, what is going to happen. Mostly, in places where I have no idea what to expect.
